Google AIY Voice Kit turned into a talking Halloween skull
A forgotten Google AIY Voice Kit sits in a skull by the sweet bowl and chats to trick-or-treaters, asking who they're dressed as.

An unused Google AIY Voice Kit, the cardboard Raspberry Pi speaker, now lives inside a 3D-printed skull and talks to trick-or-treaters. Its character, Grimjaw, cracks skeleton puns, polices the sweet bowl and sometimes asks visitors who they’re dressed as.
The software is AlsaGeist, a voice engine the builder wrote. By default it runs offline: it listens, matches what’s said against a library of canned replies, and speaks through a local Piper voice. The repo lists 46 costume rules. Cloud speech recognition and a Gemini or Groq fallback for unrecognised phrases are optional.
It needs a Raspberry Pi 3B or newer, a mic, a speaker and a decent power supply. The README has a Docker setup script for Pi OS Lite. Code and write-up are on u/tonysanchez’s Reddit and GitHub.
